4 - 2 - 2: Time to control the chaos

Hi,

I don't know about you, but it's been a busy few weeks on this end! It's in these moments that I'm reminded just how difficult it can be to balance and adapt to the different situations we get ourselves in. Hopefully, these 8 insights will offer a hand.

Est. Reading Time: 3 minutes

1. Welcome Discomfort

World-class performers rarely operate within their comfort zone because they know, little progress is ever made within your comfort zone. They see discomfort as an encouraging sign rather than a negative one.

But this lesson doesn’t just apply to the world of sport… it applies to the world of business too. If you want to reach a world-class level in business, you need to become okay with the uncomfortable. Embrace it, seek it out and learn to thrive in it.

If you can do this, your personal and professional growth will go through the roof.

2. Cognitive Overload Training

During my career, I had to learn to perform under intense pressure, surrounded by thousands of people while maintaining a clear headspace. This was something that every world-class football player had to learn in order to succeed.

Yet, I don’t see anyone learning to do this in the world of business. Because being able to perform:

In a busy office environment.

Under intense pressure.

With deadlines to meet.

Is a priceless skill in the world of business. As, it allows you to achieve world-class results, regardless of all the external factors that are working against you.

So, if you want to reach a world-class level, you need to train cognitive overload. So, when the pressure is on and it really counts, you know you can perform!

3. Remove Negative Language

This may sound simple & obvious but you’d be surprised by how many people in business still don’t practice this. As, negative self talk is holding countless people back in their career.

By simply fixing the way you speak to yourself & others, by only talking in a positive or neutral way. You’d be amazed at the impact this can have on your professional and personal life. Don’t believe me, try & find one successful person who got there by speaking to themselves in a negative way. I bet you can’t.

4. Fall In Love With The Process

Reaching your business goals can be a long road of big wins & big losses. The reality is, most of the people who give up are those who only want the reward at the end. The ones who succeed? They are the one who truly enjoy the process of getting to that end goal.

A great quote that sums this up: “The man who loves the journey will travel further than the man who loves the destination.”

This couldn’t be more spot on. So, if you want to succeed in business, learn to love the process of reaching your goal. Because without a love for the journey, your motivation & desire won’t last long enough.

1. Distribute Leadership

All the greatest football teams have one thing in common… the manager isn’t the only leader. While he may be at the top of the food chain, he isn’t the only leader in his team. The manager will distribute leadership to certain players in the team. Not only does this empower the players, but it also ensures that there is always a leader present at any given moment.

Because great leaders recognise that they can’t manage everyone 24/7. This is why distributing the leadership effectively is so important when cultivating a truly world-class team.

2. Build Trust Under Pressure

Trust is an integral part of any world-class team. They trust everyone around them with zero doubts. However building that trust is much easier said than done.

A great way to cultivate this level of trust within your team is to put team members in simulated high stress scenarios. Allowing them to work together under high stress. So, when they succeed they gain huge amounts of trust in each other. Allowing them to perform much better together in the workplace regardless of how stressful the situation may be.

So, if you want to grow a trusting team, put them in more simulated high pressure scenarios and watch them flourish.

1. Controlled Chaos

As a leader, it can be instinctive to try and keep your team from experiencing chaotic high stress moments. However, controlled chaos is something that needs to be promoted by more leaders.

This is because, by exposing your team to chaotic high stress moments in training, it allows them to learn how to thrive in these moments. Allowing them to produce better results when the pressure in on going forward.

So, if you want to cultivate a world-class team as a leader, controlled chaos should be a regular training practice.

2. Trust Over Surveillance

Countless leaders fall into the trap of surveilling their team. Especially now modern technology makes it so easy to track hours spend working on a computer. However, leaders who do this are only hurting themselves.

As by doing this, they are showing their team that they don’t have trust in them to do their job without being monitored 24/7. Which will no doubt cause serious problems within the team in the future.

This is why it’s so important for leaders to show trust by not surveilling their team. This trust will empower your team to work hard and deliver results as they respect you for trusting them.
